How Mobile Marine Reserves Could Save the Seas

With climate change, lacoste bags in hongkong habitat destruction, and other factors keeping animals on the move in search of more hospitable homes, deciding where to designate protected areas becomes tricky. But what if these areas could move along with their inhabitants?
Advances in satellite imaging and GPS tagging of species make this possible, at least in the marine environment, scientists said at a recent summit in Vancouver.
Mobile marine reserves “could provide safe havens for endangered loggerhead and leatherback turtles, albatrosses, sharks and other traveling species, and sea life that is abandoning its historic territories in response to climate change,” The Guardian reported in an article about the proposal.
The areas designated as no-trawling zones would be identified based on the presence of conditions conducive to marine life and could change based on seasonal migrations, ocean currents, and weather systems like El Nio, the paper wrote:lacoste polo long-sleeved outlet
“The stationary reserves do little to protect highly mobile animals, like most of the fish, turtles, sharks and seabirds,” said Larry Crowder, science director at the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University. “We think of protected areas as places that are locked down on a map. But places in oceans are not locked down, they move.”
Supporters say the flexibility of the approach could also benefit fishermen because it doesn’t keep them permanently out of certain geographic locations. The idea also jibes with previous research showing that small interconnected networks of marine reserves are more effective than single large no-go areas because they better reflect patterns of ocean life and reduce the possibility of a backlash from disgruntled fishermen.nba jerseys wholesale

George Huguely found guilty of second-degree murder

After nearly nine hours of deliberation Wednesday, singapore lacoste sale a jury found George Huguely V guilty of second-degree murder and grand larceny involving the death of Yeardley Love. Huguely was found not guilty on all other charges.
Second-degree murder in Virginia is defined as murder with malice that is not premeditated. It carries a sentence of five to 40 years. A sentence of grand larceny ranges from zero to 20 years.
As Huguely stood to hear the verdict, he made the sign of the cross. But as Circuit Court Judge Edward L. Hogshire read the verdicts, Huguely betrayed no emotion. He appeared to stare impassively, as he has through much of the trial. Many of his family members and supporters had ashes on their foreheads from Ash Wednesday services.cheap lacoste polo outlet
The sentencing phase of the trial began shortly after the verdict was read. Sharon Love, Yeardley Love’s mother, was first to take the stand followed by Lexi Love, Yeardley’s sister. The defense called no witnesses.
Huguely, 24, had pleaded not guilty to six charges, including first-degree murder and felony murder in commission of a robbery. The case was heard by a jury of seven men and five women.
Jurors sat through a two-week trial and had three full days off between Saturday evening’s closing statements and the beginning of deliberations Wednesday morning. They had hundreds of trial exhibits, the testimony of nearly 60 witnesses and the competing narratives of prosecution and defense to consider.
The case garnered national attention almost immediately in 2010. Love, 22, was a pretty student at an elite college who played lacrosse on a nationally ranked team and her alleged killer was her on-again, off-again boyfriend. They were University of Virginia seniors just weeks from graduation and he also played lacrosse on a nationally ranked team.
Love was found dead, facedown in her bloody pillow, by a roommate at around 2 a.m. on May 3, 2010. Police answered a call of an alcohol overdose but officers saw a hole punched in her bedroom door and quickly treated Love’s bedroom as a crime scene.
Police brought Huguely in for questioning later that day and he waived his right not to speak, telling interrogators that he went to Love’s apartment that night to talk to her. He said she freaked out and they wrestled on the floor. He said he tossed her in bed and left her apartment with her computer.
The medical examiner ruled she died of blunt force trauma. The defense brought in medical experts to dispute that, suggesting she smothered in her pillow and hemorrhages in her brain were caused by CPR. The prosecution suggested those theories are outside the bounds of accepted medical science.
Prosecutor Warren D. Chapman in his closing depicted Huguely as a controlling abuser who killed Love in a jealous rage. Defense attorney Lawrence McQ. Lawrence depicted his client as a stupid, drunk “boy athlete” who was incapable of murder, though Lawrence conceded that Huguely “contributed” to Love’s death and he asked the jury to consider involuntary manslaughter.
Witnesses spoke of a volatile two-year relationship marked by infidelities and jealousies on both sides. Huguely sent Love an email in the days before she died that said, in part, “I should have killed you.” The defense called that an innocent idiom, mbl jerseys wholesale not a threat.

Preview
Jeremy Lin and the New York Knicks have some business to attend to before they take a break for NBA All-Star weekend: back-to-back games against Southeast Division powers.
The Knicks host the Atlanta Hawks at 7:30 ET at Madison Square Garden before traveling to Miami for a game against the Eastern Conference-leading Heat.
The Knicks (16-17) are trying to rebound from a disappointing 100-92 loss to the New Jersey Nets Monday in New York. Lin, who’s averaging 14.6 points and 5.7 assists, was stellar again, finishing with 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. But the Knicks newest superstar couldn’t contain Nets star Deron Williams, who went off for 38 points, six assists and four rebounds.
The game also marked the return of Knicks All-Star Carmelo Anthony after seven games. But the forward, who’s averaging 21.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, struggled in his first game back from a groin injury, tallying 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting while going 3-for-6 from the free throw line.
Players and coaches in New York insist that it will take a few games for all the Knicks stars to jell.
“We have to get this thing sorted,” coach Mike D’Antoni said. “We have to figure out the type of team, the identity we have to have.”
Lin, Anthony and Stoudemire will take another crack at improving the chemistry against a wounded Atlanta Hawks squad. The Hawks (19-13) will be without All-Star guard Joe Johnson, who will also miss Thursday’s home contest against division foe Orlando and Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game because of tendinitis in his left knee.
Johnson, who was named to the All-Star team for the sixth year in a row, leads the Hawks with 17.6 points per game and had scored 12 before exiting in the third quarter of Monday’s 90-79 defeat at Chicago.
Forward Josh Smith (16.0 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 3.7 apg) will likely take a bigger role in Johnson’s absence. Smith is averaging 20.0 points and 7.6 boards in his last seven visits to MSG.mbl jerseys wholesale

Va. Senate kills ‘personhood’ anti-abortion bill and many other thing

A bill that would define life as starting at conception is done this year in the Virginia legislature.lacoste bags singapore
With no debate, the Senate voted 24-14 Thursday to send the so-called “personhood” bill back to committee and carry it over to 2013.
Senate Democratic Leader Richard Saslaw of Fairfax County made the motion to shelve the bill and Republican Leader Tommy Norment of James City County supported it, saying more study is needed.
The vote sidetracking the most sweeping of several anti-abortion bills came hours after the Senate Education and Health Committee endorsed it on an 8-7 party-line vote, with Democrats voting against it. The bill passed after an amendment clarifying that no provision in it would restrict the use of federally approved contraception.
At least three times, the committee chairman, Sen. Steve Martin, threatened to have police remove opponents of the bill after they spoke out during debate.
The committee earlier approved a bill requiring pre-abortion external sonograms in which ultrasonic transducers are moved about across the lower abdomen. It was amended to eliminate mandatory ultrasound procedures requiring an invasive probe.cheap lacoste polo outlet
The “personhood” bill would give embryos the full legal protection of personhood and criminalize their destruction, outlawing almost all abortions and, critics say, some forms of contraception. It would take effect only if the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortions is overturned.
After the vote, opponents of the bill jammed a foyer outside the meeting room chanting “Shame! Shame! Shame!” as the measure’s sponsor, Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, emerged.
Across the street from the legislative office tower, hundreds of people stood in protest, aiming their chants at lawmakers.
The ultrasound legislation was sent to the full Senate on an identical 8-7 party-line vote.
An amendment mirrors one adopted Wednesday in the House to an identical Senate bill after Gov. Bob McDonnell— besieged by women’s groups, ridiculed by television comedians and persuaded by arguments from GOP moderates and medical professionals — dropped his support for “transvaginal” ultrasounds.
Another bill still before legislators would eliminate government funding for abortions under Medicaid for indigent women whose fetuses with severe deformities.nfl jerseys wholesale

Recycle All You Want, The Planet Won’t Notice it,here we will have a look

Gernot Wagner, an Austrian economist at the Environmental Defense Fund, cheap watches outlet is a staunch advocate for living green. He takes public transit, recycles, and totes a reusable shopping bag to Whole Foods. But he’s well aware that his deeds aren’t even beginning to have a serious impact on the health of the planet. And neither are yours.
His new book, But Will the Planet Notice?, argues that it won’t.lacoste bags singapore For the planet to notice our efforts, he says, we’re going to have to enact policies that provide the proper economic incentives for far-reaching change. Last week, I sat down with Wagner at the Climate, Mind, and Behavior conference, where he was giving a talk. We discussed why you can recycle and compost all you wantbut the planet could care less.
These ideas make many environmentalists deeply uncomfortableand they probably should. It’s hard to accept the fact that our personal dedication to living in a planet-friendly way doesn’t even begin to register on a global scale, and it’s indeed depressing to consider that you could spend your life recycling, composting, eating organic food, taking public transportation, getting your power from solar, and biking, and essentially have no discernible impact on the planet. At all.
Like Wagner says, that’s all important stuffand we should all be doing it!but it all needs to happen on such a massive scale that limiting our contributions proactive individual lifestyle choices simply isn’t going to cut it. For the kind of large-scale, planet-saving that’s required to address a problem like climate change, we’re going to need smart government policy. And, Wagner would arguethe right economic incentives.cheap lacoste polo outlet

Feds loan $638M for health co-ops in 8 states under

Feds loan $638M for health co-ops in 8 states under the federal health insurance law

christianlouboutlncuspoutlet Health care cooperatives that are being launched in eight states announced Tuesday they will receive a total of $638 million in loans from the Obama administration under the federal health insurance law.
The government said the new nonprofit health insurers will be run by their customers and will be designed to offer coverage to individuals and small businesses. Supporters say the co-ops will keep pressure on private insurance companies for both price and coverage.
Critics, led by House Republicans who voted last year to repeal the health care law, immediately questioned the administration’s decision. The House Ways and Means Committee called the loans a political reward to a friendly constituency.
Republicans noted that the recipient that received the largest loan more than $340 million was the Freelancers Union, a nonprofit that serves independent contractors that are a growing segment of the workforce. Members are eligible for health insurance through a company owned by Freelancers.
The legislative panel questioned the organization’s eligibility in a statement that said “it appears as though the Obama administration will stop at nothing to reward their political friends.” The administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Starting in 2014, millions of people who are currently uninsured will buy private coverage in new state markets under President Barack Obama’s health care reform law. Tax-credit subsidies will help customers with the cost of the insurance.
The co-ops will compete in these state-run insurance exchanges, although co-op backers said they do not yet know the cost of premiums when the program will be formally unveiled in late 2013. Initially, they expect to compete for a small share of the overall health insurance market.
The new federal awards were announced for co-ops serving Montana, Iowa, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Wisconsin. “It will be consumer-governed and will be responsive to consumer needs,” said John Morrison, who is helping set up the cooperative in Montana.
Money from the loans will be given to the co-ops over time as they meet benchmarks for setting up claims processes, provider relationships, disease management and other cost-control efforts. Money from the loans will also be used to provide financial footing for the co-ops once they start fielding claims.
The federal government said it will be rolling out awards to co-ops in other states as more applications are processed.
The Freelancers Union said the loans will launch a new health care system that is “more affordable, more accessible, and more responsive to the needs of all workers.” It expects to cover 200,000 people in New York, New Jersey and Oregon with five years of opening enrollment.
Some individuals and small business owners helping with the formation of the cooperatives said they believe the new operations will help reduce one of their most worrisome costs.
“Every year it’s a challenge,” said Tom Murphy, who employs eight people at Door Systems of Montana. “Every year for the last four, five or six years, it seems like we have had to decrease benefits to our employees due to rising costs in the health care system.”
Montana congressman Denny Rehberg, a Republican trying to use his position as chairman of a House committee overseeing the new law to block its implementation, said he has been denied requests to see details behind the state cooperative’s lengthy application.
“President Obama told us if we wanted to keep our existing health insurance, we could,” Rehberg said in a statement. “So I don’t think we ought to be using the hard-working taxpayers’ own money to subsidize new government-approved health insurance companies that will displace existing programs that people like.”
Morrison, a Democrat who used to be the Montana insurance commissioner, said that the volunteers who originally gathered to establish the Montana cooperative will hand over operations to a board of directors elected by the customers who eventually sign up for the service.christianlouboutlnshoes

Giant Spiky Sculpture To Clean Air for New York Gallery

Giant Spiky Sculpture To Clean Air for New York Gallery much more easily

christianlouboutlnbootsoutlet In the latest winning installation proposed by emerging architects for the courtyard of Long Island City’s famed MoMA PS1 gallery, a large spiky sculpture — nicknamed “Wendy” — will clean the surrounding air using special nylon fabric.
MoMA PS1′s Young Architects Program, now in its thirteenth year, selects architects to create a temporary summer installation that will provide shade, seating and water. According to the press release, the 70 x 70 x 45 “Wendy” proposal by HWKN (Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushner) was selected due to its innovative treatment of social and sustainability issues (in addition to being equipped with a water cannon that will spray visitors):
Wendy is composed of nylon fabric treated with a ground breaking titania nanoparticle spray to neutralize airborne pollutants. During the summer of 2012, Wendy will clean the air to an equivalent of taking 260 cars off the road. Wendy s boundary is defined by tools like shade, wind, rain, music, and visual identity to reach past the confines of physical limits. Wendy crafts an environment, not just a space. Spiky arms made of the nylon fabric mentioned above will reach out with micro-programs like blasts of cool air, music, water cannons and mists to create social zones throughout the courtyard.
It looks something like a huge crystal funhouse that one can enter, but made out of off-the-shelf component and nano-tech fabrics. Besides providing an anchor of activities in the gallery’s courtyard, the gigantic structure will act as a backdrop to MoMA PS1′s “Warm Up to Summer” musical performances. The installation is slated to go up in June;
One of the wonderful things about new technologies is that creative people use them in so many remarkable and unexpected ways. It is sort of an example of Jevons’ Paradox, which suggests that as energy efficiency increases, then people will respond by using more of it. So, now that LEDs are so efficient, you can cover a snowboarder in them or fill a ceiling with lights, burning energy in ways it has never been burned before. It really isn’t very TreeHugger, but I am always excited in seeing how LEDs are changing the way so much is being done.
I’ve always be excited by unusual ways of lighting things and it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source.
The suit designer, John Spatcher, explains some of the issues:
It was decided to actively illuminate the suit using led strips powered by batteries. First trials with the leds applied to the suit with 40mm pitch showed a castellated effect at the profile edges so the pitch was reduced to 25mm to partially eliminate this effect. Further trials indicated that this would be acceptable and the final design embodied this method. Suit fabrics were little problem, the main requirement being a smooth lint-free surface to ensure good adhesion for the led strips. Some research regarding battery energy at low temperatures and safety considerations during sport maneovres led to Nimh being chosen. Temperature tests at -18degC proved satisfactory. Leds are more efficient at low temperatures than warm ones.christianlouboutlnoutlet

Ariz. sheriff asks for probe into ex’s deportation claims that what to do next

jimmy choo outlet Sheriff Paul Babeu has asked the sheriff and top prosecutor in Gila County, Ariz., to investigate claims that he threatened a Mexican ex-boyfriend with deportation to keep him quiet about their relationship.
The embattled sheriff has also asked for an investigation into possible crimes committed against him by his ex, identified only as Jose, whom Babeu accuses of improperly accessing his campaign website and social media accounts.
In a letter dated Tuesday to Gila County Sheriff John Armer and Gila County Attorney Daisey Flores, Babeu asked for the scope of the investigation to include “allegations of human rights violations, threatening and intimidating, misuse of public resources, theft of property, theft of identity, fraud and impersonation.”
The letter was issued a day after Babeu’s attorney, Chris DeRose, told The Arizona Republic that his client wouldn’t request an independent investigation.
The accusations by the ex-boyfriend surfaced Friday in a newspaper story that also described suggestive photos posted by Babeu on dating websites and intimidating text messages he allegedly sent. The resulting media firestorm raised questions about the alleged threats and about Babeu’s personal conduct.
At a lengthy news conference Babeu held the day after the story was first published in the Phoenix New Times, he confirmed he is gay but denied abusing his authority to intimidate the former boyfriend.
Babeu also denied that he sent explicit text messages to Jose from his county-issued phone, a potential abuse of county resources, and has fought back against criticism that he used poor judgment as a public official and lawman by sending sexually charged photos to Jose after posting on a gay singles website.
On Tuesday, state Sen. Ron Gould, who like Babeu is running for Congress in Arizona’s conservative 4th District in western Arizona, questioned the sheriff’s decision not to seek an outside investigation.
“I would think that if he truly feels he did nothing wrong, he would welcome such a review to clear his name,” Gould said in a written statement.
Andrew Hall, a California-based police-procedure and administration consultant, said other lawmen who have claimed to be wrongfully accused have asked for independent investigations — and subsequently been cleared.
“Your immediate attention and assistance with this investigation is requested,” Babeu wrote in his request for an investigation. “I have instructed my Sheriff’s Office and political staff to fully cooperate with your inquiry in an effort to settle these allegations made against me.”jimmy choo wedges shoes on sale

Soccer star run over the playgroud by his own car and news about Jeremy Lin

christianlouboutlnshoes Most soccer players consider an own goal just about the worst embarrassment that can be suffered. But now Valencia midfielder Ever Banega can challenge that notion.
The Argentine playmaker is expected to be out for six months after being run over by a car. His own car, that is.
Banega, according to the Daily Mail, forgot to set the handbrake of his car while stopping at a gas station, and it rolled backwards and trapped his foot.
The Spanish team released a statement saying that Banega, 23, fractured his left tibia and fibia bones.
The statement added that the breaks were not clean, the area was inflamed and that after surgery on Monday the “period of recovery is estimated to be around six months.”
As weird sports injuries go, we’d put this one up there with the time Sammy Sosa suffered a back injury while sneezing.
Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks did a sit-down interview with Rachel Nichols of ESPN that was shown on sister Disney network ABC’s Good Morning America Monday morning.
In it, the single, 23-year old Harvard graduate turned overnight NBA sensation shot down rumors he’s dating reality TV star Kim Kardashian who recently divorced Kris Humphries of the New Jersey Nets.
“Stuff about me dating Kim Kardashian, I mean, I have no idea where that came from and all these other rumors,” said Lin, adding he doesn’t think they’re each others “type.”
Other nuggets: Lin feels a bit overwhelmed by all the worldwide attention he’s getting. If he had a day to himself, he’d spend it with his brothers playing video games.christianlouboutlnbootsoutlet
