Central banks’ $9 trillion is global economic lifeline.Never before have the world’s central banks sent so much money sloshing through the global financial system.By Oli Scarff, cheap Lacoste Hats Getty ImagesA bus drives past the Bank of England in London’s financial district.By Oli Scarff, Getty ImagesA bus drives past the Bank of England in London’s financial district. From slashing interest rates and buying government debt to dangling cheap loans to banks and taking on their risky assets, central banks have taken extraordinary steps since the 2008 financial crisis to nurse the international banking system back to health.Over the past 3?? years, the central banks of the , Britain, Japan and the 17 countries that use the euro have pumped out so much money that their balance sheets have reached a combined $8.8 trillion. That’s a record, by far.STORY: STORY: STORY: The infusion of money has eased borrowing costs and raised confidence in banks, governments and companies.Critics counter that the flood of cash has made the risk of a damaging inflation spike down the road more likely. And they point to rising prices for oil, food, gold and other commodities as evidence. They warn that the easy money may allow investors to bid stock prices up to dangerous heights. They also note that the crisis led central banks to accept high-risk investments that banks want and need to unload. These investments have been collateral for money that central banks gave financial institutions.Fact is the central banks must eventually unload the trillions in assets on their books. That carries risks, too.A second round of low-cost loans that the gave banks Feb. 29 is the latest financial injection. The issued $712 billion in loans to 800 banks, on top of $658 billion it lent 523 banks in December. On March 1, the head of Germany’s central bank, Jens Weidmann, warned the ECB about the risks of loosening rules on collateral for those loans. The more lenient rules mean more banks can borrow.Weidmann said the policy exposes the ECB and other central banks to more risk, the German newspaper reported. At times, the world’s leading bankers have coordinated their actions to maximize the punch. In December, for example, major central banks sought to shore up the global financial system by making it easier for banks to borrow dollars. It was the most significant joint effort by the central banks since they cut interest rates in October 2008.The central banks feel compelled to take such far-reaching action because of their role as a nation’s lender of last resort. This function is in addition to their core task of managing interest rates and inflation through an economy’s money supply. Each central bank’s balance sheet reflects assets it’s taken on, such as bonds and mortgage-backed investments. Their balance sheets have soared since the financial crisis exploded. The Federal Reserve’s has reached $2.94 trillion. That’s triple its size in August 2008, just before the crisis hit. The ECB’s is $3.58 trillion, nearly twice its level before the crisis. The ‘s balance sheet has jumped three-fold. The ‘s is up 28%.”This is the first time in history that we have seen anything like this amount of liquidity from central banks flooding the system,” said , head of DMJ Advisors and the author of several books on the Fed., chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, said the only period that even comes close would be the central banks’ efforts in the 1930s to fight the . However, part of the logic behind the central banks’ current actions is the consensus view of many historians that the Fed prolonged the Depression by failing to provide emergency loans to banks or to take other steps that might have stemmed the damage.” is a historian of the Great Depression,” Zandi said of the current Fed chairman. “That is why he has been so aggressive in using the Fed’s balance sheet to respond to the current problems.”The central banks have revealed no plans to reverse course and tighten credit soon. The Fed has said it expects to keep short-term rates at record lows near zero until at least late 2014. At a House hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on Feb. 29, some lawmakers pressed Bernanke about the risks of keeping rates so low for so long.”One of the problems with setting these horizons out so far is that the private sector starts to expect that, and if circumstances change, crawling back off that limb could be very difficult,” Rep. Melvin Watt., D-N.C., told Bernanke.”The policy is a conditional policy,” Bernanke responded. “It’s based on what we know now. If there’s a substantial change in the outlook, we’d have to adjust accordingly.”Bernanke hinted that if the U.S. economy continued to improve consistently, the Fed might have to consider raising rates sooner. For now, following the Fed’s lead, other central banks have kept their benchmark short-term rates at super-lows. They’ve created low-rate lending programs for commercial banks, like the three-year loans the ECB is providing. And they’ve bought bonds to try to drive down long-term rates. The bond purchases are known as “quantitative easing,” or QE. The Fed has completed two such programs. Some hope it will announce a third. Supporters note that the U.S. economy remains less than robust, and unemployment is a still-high 8.3%. Further reducing rates on mortgages and other loans could energize the U.S. economy, they argue.Critics counter that more bond purchases by the Fed could ignite inflation. They note that the U.S. economy has been steadily improving, and unemployment has dropped for five straight months. Remarks that Bernanke made at the Feb. 29 hearing suggesting a somewhat more upbeat economic outlook made further bond-buying appear less likely. The ECB is legally barred from buying bonds directly from governments. But it’s bought 219 billion ($268 billion) in bonds on the secondary market to try to lower rates and reduce borrowing costs for Europe’s most troubled economies. The ECB has also been cutting short-term rates and offering super-cheap loans to banks. In its second installment of three-year loans, the ECB is charging just 1% interest. The idea is to get banks to use the loans to buy government debt and further ease nations’ borrowing costs.Earlier this month, the Bank of Japan announced an expansion of its own asset-purchase program. So did the Bank of England.”Everyone is following the Federal Reserve’s example of printing money to get out of this economic slump,” Jones said. The Fed’s expanding balance sheet reflects its ability to create money, use it to buy Treasurys and lower long-term rates. Lower rates make borrowing cheaper. And they typically cause some investors to shift some money out of bonds and into assets such as stocks. Stock prices tend to rise as a result.A larger number of dollars in circulation lowers the dollar’s value compared with other currencies. That can help the economy by making U.S. exports cheaper overseas.Central banks face a delicate task in deciding when and how to unload the assets on their swollen balance sheets without jolting the financial system.Bernanke and other central bank officials have stressed their commitment to gradually tighten credit before inflation poses a major threat.”Central banks around the world are making a bet that they will be able to handle inflation down the road,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at . It’s a major gamble and the ramifications, if they turn out to be wrong, would be staggering. discount christian louboutin shoes If they’re right, they’ll be revered as economic heroes for all time.

I watched the cast announcement with the rest of America — from home — and the way he came out on stage: I just thought ‘Wow, this man has great stage presence.’ And he’s very confident, so I’m looking forward to that. I’m also looking forward to seeing Maria Menounos and Sherri Shepherd who’s wanted to be on the show for so long and has talked openly about it. And I’m very happy she’s finally on our show.”More: ??But just because she is excited about participants, viewers shouldn’t think Inaba is going to play favorites. “Before the season, I try not to do any research on anybody because I think it’s better as judges for us to remain as neutral as possible which is difficult to do these days with the media the way it is. … I try to stay neutral and once I hear the names, I try not to really think about it,” she tells USA TODAY. “People come up to me on the street all the time and want to engage with me and tell me their thoughts and I try not to listen because I don’t want to go in with any sort of notion on who’s going to be good or who’s not going to be good. Here, I’m going to have to be part of moving on with a championship caliber organization. That’s exciting. That’s a challenge I’m looking forward to.”MWR still has a way to go. Although Truex had top-10s in four of the last five races in 2011, he has not won since 2007 when he was driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc. He’s finished 22nd and 18th in points since joining MWR.”Looking at the success Martin (Truex) had at the end of last year, I saw speed here,” Bowyer said. “And I’ve seen speed here before. jimmy choo shoes sale us flat whooped us at Chicago a couple years ago. How Mobile Marine Reserves Could Save the Seas
With climate change, lacoste bags in hongkong habitat destruction, and other factors keeping animals on the move in search of more hospitable homes, deciding where to designate protected areas becomes tricky. But what if these areas could move along with their inhabitants?
Advances in satellite imaging and GPS tagging of species make this possible, at least in the marine environment, scientists said at a recent summit in Vancouver.
Mobile marine reserves “could provide safe havens for endangered loggerhead and leatherback turtles, albatrosses, sharks and other traveling species, and sea life that is abandoning its historic territories in response to climate change,” The Guardian reported in an article about the proposal.
The areas designated as no-trawling zones would be identified based on the presence of conditions conducive to marine life and could change based on seasonal migrations, ocean currents, and weather systems like El Nio, the paper wrote:lacoste polo long-sleeved outlet
“The stationary reserves do little to protect highly mobile animals, like most of the fish, turtles, sharks and seabirds,” said Larry Crowder, science director at the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University. “We think of protected areas as places that are locked down on a map. But places in oceans are not locked down, they move.”
Supporters say the flexibility of the approach could also benefit fishermen because it doesn’t keep them permanently out of certain geographic locations. The idea also jibes with previous research showing that small interconnected networks of marine reserves are more effective than single large no-go areas because they better reflect patterns of ocean life and reduce the possibility of a backlash from disgruntled fishermen.nba jerseys wholesale
George Huguely found guilty of second-degree murder
After nearly nine hours of deliberation Wednesday, singapore lacoste sale a jury found George Huguely V guilty of second-degree murder and grand larceny involving the death of Yeardley Love. Huguely was found not guilty on all other charges.
Second-degree murder in Virginia is defined as murder with malice that is not premeditated. It carries a sentence of five to 40 years. A sentence of grand larceny ranges from zero to 20 years.
As Huguely stood to hear the verdict, he made the sign of the cross. But as Circuit Court Judge Edward L. Hogshire read the verdicts, Huguely betrayed no emotion. He appeared to stare impassively, as he has through much of the trial. Many of his family members and supporters had ashes on their foreheads from Ash Wednesday services.cheap lacoste polo outlet
The sentencing phase of the trial began shortly after the verdict was read. Sharon Love, Yeardley Love’s mother, was first to take the stand followed by Lexi Love, Yeardley’s sister. The defense called no witnesses.
Huguely, 24, had pleaded not guilty to six charges, including first-degree murder and felony murder in commission of a robbery. The case was heard by a jury of seven men and five women.
Jurors sat through a two-week trial and had three full days off between Saturday evening’s closing statements and the beginning of deliberations Wednesday morning. They had hundreds of trial exhibits, the testimony of nearly 60 witnesses and the competing narratives of prosecution and defense to consider.
The case garnered national attention almost immediately in 2010. Love, 22, was a pretty student at an elite college who played lacrosse on a nationally ranked team and her alleged killer was her on-again, off-again boyfriend. They were University of Virginia seniors just weeks from graduation and he also played lacrosse on a nationally ranked team.
Love was found dead, facedown in her bloody pillow, by a roommate at around 2 a.m. on May 3, 2010. Police answered a call of an alcohol overdose but officers saw a hole punched in her bedroom door and quickly treated Love’s bedroom as a crime scene.
Police brought Huguely in for questioning later that day and he waived his right not to speak, telling interrogators that he went to Love’s apartment that night to talk to her. He said she freaked out and they wrestled on the floor. He said he tossed her in bed and left her apartment with her computer.
The medical examiner ruled she died of blunt force trauma. The defense brought in medical experts to dispute that, suggesting she smothered in her pillow and hemorrhages in her brain were caused by CPR. The prosecution suggested those theories are outside the bounds of accepted medical science.
Prosecutor Warren D. Chapman in his closing depicted Huguely as a controlling abuser who killed Love in a jealous rage. Defense attorney Lawrence McQ. Lawrence depicted his client as a stupid, drunk “boy athlete” who was incapable of murder, though Lawrence conceded that Huguely “contributed” to Love’s death and he asked the jury to consider involuntary manslaughter.
Witnesses spoke of a volatile two-year relationship marked by infidelities and jealousies on both sides. Huguely sent Love an email in the days before she died that said, in part, “I should have killed you.” The defense called that an innocent idiom, mbl jerseys wholesale not a threat.
